SFPD goes deep undercover in Dodger Blue

Source   SFGate

No, Giants faithful, that patron in a Dodger jersey next to you didn’t drive up from LA just for the game. That “fan” could actually be an undercover cop.

You heard right: SF Mayor Ed Lee and Police Chief Greg Suhr announced Monday that members of The City’s police squad will be undercover in that terrible blue as the Dodgers take on the Gigantes this week at AT&T Park.

Us sports fanatics know how heated this rivalry is. Especially when you consider the Giants are closing the gap in the NL West, only three games behind a Dodgers team that has Matt Kemp on the DL and Andre Ethier in a hitting slump.

This isn’t the first time the SFPD has gone undercover in rival gear to keep fan-on-fan violence from breaking out. Police went to last season’s NFC championship game at Candlestick dressed in a deeper shade of New York Giants blue to catch threatening 49er fans in the act. A shooting at the Raiders-Niners game earlier in the season prompted the extra security.

Maybe the police should’ve also been monitoring the posts on Kyle William’s Twitter page, but that’s a whole other story.

Mayor Lee told SFGate:

“We want to make sure there isn’t anyone out there intent on doing harm.”

It’s unfortunate that past events have driven the mayor to take these measures. But in an effort to prevent another violent incident like what befell Bryan Stow, perhaps undercover police are just what peaceful sports fans need.
