Founded in 1941, and operated jointly by the California Department of Mental Hygiene and the School of Medicine, the institute offers training to medical and nursing students, advanced fellows in psychiatry, physicians in other special fields, social workers, schoolteachers, the clergy, and rehabilitation therapy trainees. Clinical work is both inpatient, for short-term treatment of severe disorders, and outpatient, for adults and children. Two major new programs, already widely copied throughout the United States, are the care of the geriatric and the acutely disturbed at home.
