You can add another running back to the competition behind Frank Gore.
The San Francisco 49ers activated Kendall Hunter from the physically unable to perform list on Saturday, and he is expected to be on the field this afternoon for the teams’ only pubic practice at Candlestick as part of Fan Fest.
He has completely recovered from a torn Achilles’ suffered last Thanksgiving against New Orleans on the same play in which slot receiver Kyle Williams hurt his ACL.
Hunter is now the sixth running back on the 49ers off-season roster joining Frank Gore, LaMichael James, Anthony Dixon, D.J. Harper, and Jewel Hampton.
The 24-year-old is entering his third season and has already proven to be a valuable backup to Gore.
In 11 games last season, Hunter rushed for 371 yards and two touchdowns on 72 carries while hauling in nine receptions for 60 yards. He also averaged 23.6 yards per kick return.
Hunter again becomes the favorite to spell Gore as he’s done since his rookie year in 2011, providing a nice change of pace.
