Oakland police estimated that about 300 people are walking through downtown this evening. The group is protesting a grand jury’s decision announced Monday evening to not indict Ferguson Officer Darren Wilson in the fatal shooting of Brown Aug. 9.
Protesters were seen entering the freeway from 19th and Castro streets. CHP officers were on the freeway and protesters were seen walking over the center divide. A Sig-alert for both directions of Highway 980 was issued at 6:22 p.m. but traffic reopened about 20 minutes later, CHP officials said.
Police have closed 14th Street and Broadway due to the protest and are advising the public to take alternate routes.
