Fatal shooting breaks up Bay Point vigil
A man was killed and a woman was injured in a shooting in Bay Point where a vigil for a 2009 murder victim was taking place on Friday night, a Contra Costa County sheriff’s spokesman said today.
Deputies responded to a report of shots fired in the area of Marin Avenue and Willow Pass Road around 9:40 p.m. Friday, sheriff’s spokesman Jimmy Lee said.
Arriving deputies found a 40-year-old man who was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency crews, Lee said. A 22-year-old woman was injured at the scene and transported to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek for injuries not considered life-threatening, according to Lee.
A crowd was in the area Friday night for a vigil celebrating the birthday of a man who was killed there in 2009, the spokesman said.
Witnesses reported that a person had fled the scene after the shooting, Lee said.
Detectives are working to determine the suspect’s identity and motive, according to Lee.
