6:30 violence kills 4/20 buzz

Six men attacked a 21-year-old man attempting to purchase marijuana in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park on Monday during the 4/20 celebrations, police said.

According to police, at about 6:30 p.m. Monday, one of the suspects asked the victim if he would like to buy marijuana from him.

The victim agreed and handed the suspect cash, but the suspect then walked away with the money instead of handing over the marijuana. The victim followed the man and asked for his money back, at which point five other men approached the victim, police said.

The suspects beat up the victim and took his remaining cash, then fled on foot and remained at large as of today, according to police.

The victim suffered facial abrasions and was transported to San Francisco General Hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening, police said.

About an hour later, a San Francisco park ranger was struck in the head with a glass bottle while on patrol at the marijuana festivities in Golden Gate Park on Monday evening, police said.

Police said the victim, described as a 51-year-old park ranger employed by the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, was sitting on an all-terrain vehicle around 7:15 p.m. in the park’s Sharon Meadow when a man approached him from behind.

The suspect, a 37-year-old man, hit the park ranger in the head with a glass bottle.

Police said the park ranger was taken to Saint Francis Memorial Hospital with a headache and complaints of pain. He was released within a few hours.

Officers took the suspect into custody and are continuing to investigate the motive for the attack. The suspect’s name was not immediately available from police.
