A 16-year-old girl died after the car she was in crashed into a tree Saturday night in Gilroy, police said Sunday.
Officers responded around 10 p.m. to a report of a car crash in the 6300 block of Miller Avenue, according to police.
Officers arrived to find the car had veered off the roadway and struck a tree.
The driver and the rear passenger, both teenagers, were able to get out of the car but the front seat passenger was still inside and suffering from major trauma, police said.
Emergency medical crews rendered first aid and transported the 16-year-old to a hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Police are still investigating the cause of the crash but said drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors.
As of Sunday evening, authorities had not yet released the teen’s name.
