Cupertino cans July 4th fireworks over drought
Cupertino city officials announced Wednesday that they have canceled a Fourth of July fireworks show this year due to concerns surrounding the state drought.
The annual show was scheduled to be held at the Cupertino High School fields, but the Fremont Union High School District is “reluctantly denying” the city’s request to use the site because hosting the display would require spraying more than 100,000 gallons of water, city officials said.
The fields need to be watered “to prevent damage to the facility,” according to the city officials.
The city was unable to find another site to launch the fireworks, city officials said.
There will be other events scheduled for the July 4 holiday including a morning flag-raising ceremony and children’s parade at Memorial Park.
More information on planned events for the holiday can be found on the city’s website at http://www.cupertino.org.
