Rain expected to snap Bay Area heat wave

Ocean Beach Sunset
Glorious winter sunsets at Ocean Beach are expected to give way to rain and heavy surf Wednesday and Thursday as a possibly strong storm blows through the Bay Area.

Bay Area residents are about to get a break from the warm and dry weather that has parked itself over the region since last week, as rain is expected Wednesday, the National Weather Service said today.

A Pacific storm system is expected to approach the region causing widespread rainfall throughout the area, with heavy rain possible, especially along the coast, according to the NWS.

Thunderstorms may be possible by late Wednesday afternoon and evening with lingering showers lasting through Thursday morning.

Wind speeds are also set to increase Wednesday morning, peaking during the afternoon and early evening at speeds of 20 to 30 miles per hour and with gusts reaching 45 to 50 mph in elevated areas, NWS officials said.

A secondary, smaller weather system will then pass through the North Bay on Friday, bringing a chance of light rain to the area, according to the NWS.
