An Oakland Police helicopter tracked a carjacking suspect across the bay, into San Francisco.
A carjacking suspect evaded Oakland police and drove to San Francisco Thursday afternoon but was followed by a helicopter and arrested when he got stuck in traffic, a police spokeswoman said.
The suspect was spotted by officers in the area of Hegenberger Road and Edes Avenue at 4:09 p.m., police spokeswoman Officer Johnna Watson said.
Officers recognized the car from a prior carjacking and tried to pull it over, but the driver fled.
The Oakland police helicopter Argus was in the area, so officers didn’t pursue the suspect and instead the helicopter tracked the vehicle to San Francisco from the air.
When they got off the highway and onto city streets, they were caught in traffic, so Oakland police officers moved in to stop the suspect again.
This time the suspect, with nowhere to go, surrendered and was taken into custody, Watson said. His name has not been released.
