Antioch police arrest man on suspicion of identify theft

A man was arrested Tuesday in Antioch on suspicion of identity theft after he was found in possession of false identification and mail that did not belong to him, police said.

At 7:47 a.m., officers were dispatched to investigate a report of a suspicious occupied vehicle located in the 2000 block of Eucalyptus Way.

The reporting party informed dispatchers that the suspect matched the description of a mail theft suspect they saw on the Next Door application, police said.

After searching the suspect and the vehicle, officers discovered that he had mail belonging to about 30 individual victims, police said. The suspect was identified as 34-year-old Joseph Malfitano.

According to police, Malfitano also had an altered driver’s license that had his image, but displayed a victim’s personal information.

Malfitano was arrested and booked into the Martinez Detention Facility. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the Antioch Police Department at (925) 778-2441 or send a text tip to 274637 using the keyword “ANTIOCH”.
