49ers place Armstead on IR during busy Tuesday

Twenty-four hours after the San Francisco 49ers confirmed reports that Arik Armstead would require surgery for a broken hand suffered during Sunday’s loss to the Washington Redskins, the team has announced their decision to place the defensive lineman on injured reserve.

Along with Armstead’s designation, the 49ers have released tight end Logan Paulsen in order to make room for defensive linemen Tony McDaniel and Leger Douzable, who each signed with the team Tuesday afternoon.

McDaniel, 32, arrives in San Francisco for his 12th NFL season having spent time with four different teams. The former Jacksonville Jaguar, Miami Dolphin, Seattle Seahawk and Tampa Bay Buccaneer boasts 160 tackles and 11.5 sacks in 141 NFL games.

Douzable, 31, was most recently with the 49ers during their final three preseason games this season but was cut before Week 1. In four years in the NFL, Douzable has played in 14 games in which he recorded 95 tackles and 6.5 sacks.

On Monday, head coach Kyle Shanahan expressed concerns regarding the lack of depth on the defensive line. In addition to the most recent loss of Armstead, Aaron Lynch also suffered a calf injury on Sunday while Tank Caradine (ankle) and Ronald Blair (thumb) had already been placed on IR.

With the once deep group now depleted, the move to sign two fresh bodies on the defensive line will likely soothe the qualms of Shanahan.
