A 21-year-old University of California at Berkeley student is hospitalized in critical condition after being struck by an alleged drunk driver on Monday night, police said.
The woman was jogging in the area of Durant Avenue and Dana Street, about a block away from the UC Berkeley campus shortly before 9:45 p.m. on Monday when the driver, who was traveling east on Durant, hit her, according to Officer Byron White.
The jogger was taken to a hospital to be treated for her injuries and officers who investigated the collision subsequently arrested Esteban Slavitt, 26, of Berkeley, on suspicion of driving under the influence causing injury, White said.
The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office charged Slavitt with felony driving under the influence causing injury and a special allegation for causing great bodily injury.
Slavitt, who is free on bail, is scheduled to return to court next Wednesday to possibly enter a plea.
