The Walnut Creek City Council will on Tuesday consider approving a “food hall, beer garden and European courtyard” project on a Locust Street parcel in the downtown area.
The Foundry project calls for 27,545 square feet total on the onetime Veterans Memorial Building site parcel on Locust Street between Mt. Diablo Boulevard and Olympic Boulevard. The one-story project includes 8,168 square feet of restaurant space, 11,545 square feet of common dining area and a large outdoor patio featuring a children’s play area, a fountain, games and theater space.
The seeds for this project were sewn in 2008, when Walnut Creek’s Redevelopment Agency and local developer BH Development — which owns other nearby retail properties — agreed on a sale agreement for the land. A downturn in the economy and the elimination of the Redevelopment Agency both helped slow the project, and the Foundry has since been changed from a two-story project (then called Oak Lane) to a single-story one. The city’s Design Review Commission approved the scaled-back plans in May.
The applicant is proposing to pay an in-lieu parking fee for 51 total parking spaces; that money will go to help pay for a future parking structure nearby.
The council meeting begins at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 1666 Main St.
