BART police are asking for the public’s help in finding a person of interest in the stabbing of a 39-year-old transient man at the Warm Springs station in Fremont early Thursday morning.

BART officials said police investigators want to identify the man so they can interview him.

BART Deputy Police Chief Ed Alvarez said the person of interest is described as a white or Hispanic man in his late 20s or early 30s who was wearing a black San Francisco Giants hooded sweatshirt and a black knit cap.

BART also released images of the man.

According to BART, Fremont police received a call at 2:18 a.m. today reporting that a man was lying in a street near the Warm Springs station.

The victim was found with injuries to his chest and buttocks that weren’t life-threatening and was taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose to be treated.

As of 3:30 p.m. today the man was still at the hospital but was in stable condition, Alvarez said.

BART said the case was turned over to its Police Department when it was determined that the offense occurred on BART property, although BART officials said the stabbing occurred outside the station, as the station was closed at the time.

BART said the details surrounding the assault are not entirely clear but an investigation is underway.

BART police said anyone who has information about the stabbing or the person of interest should call investigators at (510) 464-7040.
