At 2:34 p.m., an officer tried to stop a vehicle for a violation but the driver kept going with police pursuing until the vehicle crashed into other vehicles at Dover Avenue and East Travis Boulevard.
Police said the driver had been shot and has died.
The driver, 22, and the 24-year-old victim, who was a passenger in the vehicle, are believed to have been in a relationship and lived together in Fairfield. Also in the vehicle was a 10-month-old child who was not injured, police said.
Apparently, the victim shot the suspect after the victim called out to police for help. Officers found a gun in the vehicle.
The suspect’s name is being withheld until his family is notified and the name of the victim is being withheld because she was the victim of domestic violence.
Police said the intersection of Dover Avenue and East Travis Boulevard will be closed until about 9 p.m. as police collect evidence and document the scene.
None of the officers fired their weapons during the police chase and there are no outstanding suspects, police said.
