A suspected gunman was apprehended late Thursday on the campus of San Jose State University, city police said.
As of 8:21 p.m., San Jose police said that the person they detained did not have a gun on him and officers were searching for a gun. A lockdown of the university was lifted just a few minutes before police made their announcement, a university spokesperson said.
But police were still asking people to stay away from the Spartan Complex where a search was made for the suspect, spokesperson Robin McElhatton said. San Jose police said that at 5:33 p.m. officers responded to the area of North Second Street and East Santa Clara Street after someone called to say a man brandished a gun.
Officers arrived and spotted a suspect who ran onto campus near South Fourth Street and San Carlos Street.
