No Giants fan will ever forget May 25, 2011. No Giants fan will ever forget a relative unknown barreling into their Golden Child.
Tonight, the Miami Marlins return to San Francisco for the first time since that unforgettable night last year when Scott Cousins ended Buster Posey’s season in a collision at home plate.
Almost one year later, Posey is healthy and tearing the cover off the ball. Cousins, though, is floundering at Triple-A New Orleans.
That alone won’t erase the bitterness Giants fans will always feel for Cousins. Neither will the fact that following the May 25 game, Cousins only played in 14 more games that season before being placed on the disabled list on June 14.
As for Posey, he told The AP he’s pleased with his comeback:
“I’ve been happy with the first month. My ankle has responded great. I’ve been out there as much or maybe more than I hoped for.”
Manager Bruce Bochy echoed that positive attitude:
“He’s doing fine. If you watch him, he’s not showing any effects. That’s behind us, that’s behind him and I really don’t think he thinks about it much anymore.”
Posey is doing more than fine. He’s hitting .353 with four home runs and receiving huge ovations from his adoring Giants fans happy to see the 2010 NL Rookie of the Year back in action.
