Church Street ready for its red paint job

The long-awaited red transit-only lanes that were suppose be painted in the fall last year on a section of Church Street will finally get painted this weekend.

The Church Street transit-only lane pilot is a part of Muni’s master plan to make public transportation in the city more reliable and faster. The center lanes on Church Street between Duboce Avenue and 16th Street will be painted red to keep cars from interfering with the J-Church and 22-Fillmore.

Transit officials said they hope the transit-only lane will help reduce travel time and improve the reliability of both Muni lines.

SF Streetsblog reports that weather delays caused the delay of painting the transit-only lane. In order for the paint to stick, the transit agency needed three days of weather where temperatures are above 55 degrees with no precipitation. The weather forecast this weekend calls for mid-60s.

Muni riders should take note that the J-Church will not operate in the subway from 5 a.m. on Saturday to 1 a.m. Sunday during the painting of the transit-only lane.
