49ers add Eric Wright to cornerback mix

It took longer than expected, but on Thursday the San Francisco 49ers officially announced the signing of veteran cornerback Eric Wright to a one-year contract — and his placement on the Non-Football Injury List.

The deal comes after a voided trade last month due to medical reasons. The 28-year-old San Francisco native can be activated anytime during camp.

To clear a roster spot for him, the team waived undrafted rookie corner Lowell Rose who was earlier cut in anticipation of a move for Wright, but quickly re-signed when it didn’t work out.

Chris Culliver’s season-ending ACL tear stirred speculation that a deal would eventually be worked out with Wright.

Regarding Tuesday’s move, 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement:

“We are pleased to welcome Eric to the 49ers organization and look forward to his contributions. Eric is currently tending to a personal matter and he will join the team as soon as possible.”

Wright has 362 tackles, 70 pass deflections and 14 interceptions during a six-year career playing for the Browns, Lions, and Buccaneers; 49ers senior offensive consultant Eric Mangini was his head coach in Cleveland from 2009-10.

Coming back home will also enable Wright to work hand-in-hand with his Wright Steps Foundation that mentors at-risk youth in San Francisco’s Bay View district where he grew up.
