  1. I googled “Elks scam” and found this article. My question arose because of this:
I’m an Elk. Two years in a row, I donated $100 each year to special projects. Those who do this are supposed to get name recognition in the magazine, plus some kind of souvenir. The first year I got neither. OK, fine; I’m doing it for the cause, not the recognition.
The second year I sent in another $100 and again I got neither. Then I got a letter from the Elks thanking me for the $10 down payment on my $100 dollar pledge. Really? I send in two checks, $100 each, and get this?
So I wrote to the Elks asking what happened to my donation. They make it very hard to contact anyone so I wrote to several officers.
    Not one response.
I now suspect that someone in the organization is skimming donations. Obviously they will not get another penny out of me.
This article about the San Fran lodge makes my suspicions seem quite reasonable and likely.
