A recycling worker is in stable condition at a hospital after he was injured in an explosion as he emptied a recycling container in Oakland on Tuesday morning, according to a California Waste Solutions spokeswoman. Witnesses reported that the employee was thrown into the air in the explosion near Moss Avenue at about 8 a.m. Tuesday, agency spokeswoman Tasion Kwamilele said.

The Oakland Police Department was immediately notified of the explosion and a bomb squad was dispatched to the scene, according to Kwamilele.

“Our employee was immediately transported to a local hospital and is in stable condition,” Kwamilele said.

She said California Waste Solutions’ management team is currently at the hospital providing additional support to the employee’s family.

“The safety of our employees is of the utmost importance and we will continue working with local officials as the circumstances surrounding this incident are investigated,” Kwamilele said.
