A man who allegedly struck and injured an Oakland police officer during a traffic stop and then fled Tuesday morning was found and arrested in San Leandro later that day, Oakland police said.

The 28-year-old suspect, whose name is not yet being released, was arrested for allegedly hitting the officer who had pulled him over in the 2400 block of Havenscourt Boulevard for failing to stop at a stop sign shortly after 11 a.m. Tuesday, according to police.

The uniformed officer was on a marked police motorcycle when he pulled over the suspect, who quickly reversed and struck the officer as he dismounted the motorcycle and approached the vehicle, police said. The officer was taken to a hospital and was in stable condition as of Tuesday afternoon.

The suspect fled but authorities found him and his vehicle in San Leandro just before 5 p.m. Tuesday and arrested him on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer and for violating his probation, according to police.
